The Bukharian Jewish community celebrates a significant milestone as Manashe Khaimov becomes the first Bukharian man and the second Bukharian ever to be named a Wexner Field Fellow. Joining the prestigious Class 9 cohort, a group of 15 fellows, Khaimov’s selection, revealed in an announcement on Tuesday, not only highlights his remarkable leadership but also shines a spotlight on the contributions of the Bukharian Jewish community to the broader Jewish world.
“Being the first Bukharian man and the second Bukharian overall to join the Wexner Fellowship is monumental. This organization has existed for over 30 years, and to have our community represented in such a prestigious program is a big deal,” Khaimov told the Bukharian Times.
The Wexner Field Fellowship, established in partnership with the Jim Joseph Foundation, equips exceptional Jewish professionals with leadership training, professional development, and Jewish learning over three years. The program, now in its ninth iteration, focuses on established professionals aged 37-50, a shift designed to include those with non-traditional career paths. This expanded age range has opened the door for candidates like Khaimov, whose journey reflects resilience, innovation, and dedication to the Jewish community.
In 2021, Rozeeta Mavashev, Executive Director of Masa Israel Journey, became the first Bukharian woman named a Wexner Fellow. Her achievement highlights the growing presence of the Bukharian community in Jewish leadership, furthering her impact through her role on SAMI’s Advisory Board.
“Talented leaders are vital to creating Jewish experiences and communities that add meaning throughout people’s lives and provide support at particularly challenging moments,” said Dawne Bear Novicoff, Acting President and CEO of the Jim Joseph Foundation.
Khaimov, the CEO of the Sephardic American Mizrahi Initiative (SAMi), has long been a dynamic force in the Jewish world. A tireless advocate for Sephardic and Mizrahi voices, he has worked to create spaces that celebrate the rich tapestry of Jewish diversity. Under his leadership, SAMi has become a hub for cultural preservation, education, and intergenerational dialogue.
The Wexner Foundation’s rigorous selection process ensures that fellows not only excel in their careers but also possess the potential to transform the Jewish community. Khaimov’s inclusion in this elite cohort underscores his role as a bridge-builder and innovator. His leadership journey began with a passion for connecting people to their heritage and has evolved into a mission to foster unity and understanding across diverse Jewish communities.
For the Bukharian Jewish community, this achievement is profoundly meaningful. The Bukharian Jewish diaspora, with its roots in Central Asia, is known for its resilience and commitment to preserving its unique traditions. Khaimov’s recognition serves as a testament to the community’s contributions to Jewish life in North America and beyond.
As a Wexner Field Fellow, Khaimov will join a network of over 3,000 professionals and volunteer leaders who share a commitment to advancing Jewish life. The program includes leadership seminars led by world-class faculty, one-on-one coaching, and customized professional development opportunities. Fellows also engage in intensive Jewish learning, gaining a deeper appreciation for the diverse practices and traditions that define the North American Jewish experience.
Reflecting on the impact of this opportunity, Khaimov said, “Being part of the Wexner Fellowship is not just a personal achievement; it’s a chance to pave the way for other Bukharian Jews to join the Wexner Fellowship in the years to come. I am deeply honored to represent our community on this national stage.”
His leadership is sure to inspire future generations, leaving a lasting impact on the unity, innovation, and vibrancy of the Jewish community.
