Miami, FL – The vibrant cultural tapestry of Miami college campuses is set to become even richer with the arrival of the Sephardic American Mizrahi Initiative (SAMi). SAMi, dedicated to celebrating and promoting Sephardic and Mizrahi culture, is embarking on an ambitious expansion to Miami colleges, promising to bring a new dimension of diversity and inclusivity to campus life. Earlier this year, the Pre-Mimouna event held at Miami University in collaboration with FIU and UM Hillel’s on April 16th marked a significant milestone for SAMi. With over 50 participants attending in three waves, the event drew a remarkable 60% turnout from the targeted communities, including Sephardic, Mizrahi, Spanish-speaking, Israeli, and Jews of Color students. The atmosphere was electric as students came together to celebrate their shared cultural heritage and forge connections that transcend traditional boundaries.

Mimouna, a cherished tradition across North Africa, served as the inspiration for the event. Originating as a post-Passover celebration, Mimouna symbolizes the end of seclusion and the reopening of homes to neighbors, with shared sweets, bread, and cultural exchange. SAMi's decision to host a Pre-Mimouna event highlights its commitment to fostering unity and friendship among diverse communities, echoing the spirit of inclusivity that defines the organization. SAMi's expansion to Miami college campuses is made possible through vital support from The Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Jewish Incubator Grant. This funding not only provided the necessary resources to bring SAMi's programming to fruition but also underscored the significance of SAMi's mission in promoting cultural understanding and appreciation among students.

As SAMi continues to make its mark on Miami college campuses, the initiative is poised to ignite a new chapter of cultural enrichment and inclusivity in higher education. Through a diverse array of events, workshops, and educational initiatives, SAMi aims to empower students to embrace and celebrate their Sephardic and Mizrahi heritage while fostering meaningful connections with their peers.

The significance of SAMi's expansion to Miami college campuses cannot be overstated. In a city known for its vibrant multiculturalism, SAMi's presence adds another layer of cultural richness and diversity to the educational landscape. By providing students with opportunities to engage with and learn from Sephardic and Mizrahi cultures, SAMi is not only enriching their academic experience but also preparing them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.

Looking ahead, SAMi remains committed to its vision of creating a more inclusive and culturally diverse campus community. With the support of its partners and the enthusiasm of Miami college students, SAMi is well-positioned to bring about lasting change and leave a legacy of cultural celebration and understanding for generations to come.

“SAMi is a central hub for Sephardic and Mizrahi Life on college campuses nationwide. Florida has the largest Jewish Student population after California and NYC and a very large Sephardic and Mizrahi student body,” said its Founder and CEO, Manashe Khaimov
